What Does an Antenatal/Antepartum Doula Do?
The antenatal or antepartum
doula offers antenatal care and pregnancy support to the high-risk mother while she is still pregnant. The
expectant mother may be confined to bed for medical reasons and therefore unable to look after herself or others. In this
case she will require special antenatal care. The antenatal doula provides pregnancy support by assisting with mother/child
care, light housekeeping, running short errands and preparing nutritious meals. She supports and educates the mother about
pregnancy, birth and postnatal issues and provides her with appropriate help. The antenatal doula can also lend an ear to
help the mother deal with the additional fears associated with a high-risk pregnancy and possible outcomes. And, most importantly,
she helps keep the family organised so their lives can flow more smoothly even if mother is not feeling well.
